A lot of undetected COVID19 cases in France

14 January 2021

In December 2020, Pullano et al. from INSERM and Santé Publique France released an article in Nature presenting some of their results to mesure the underdetection of COVID19 in France. They used surveillance data coupled with mathematical transmission models to estimate the rate of detection of COVID-19 symptomatic cases in France after the first lockdown. They found that 9 out of 10 cases, were not established by the surveillance system in the first 7 weeks following lockdown from May 11 to June 28 2020, although the test positivity rate did not exceed WHO recommendations (5%). The healthcare system appeared to insufficiently test and detect the virus circulation. The disease control relies more than never on efficient testing with easier access to avoid a third wave.
