The recent pandemic has showed us that the link between humans and other animals is essential when dealing with infectious diseases. While the “one health” concept is recognised as useful, it is still difficult to implement and divisions between disciplines persist. Yet, the animal health expertise could help prevent outbreaks in humans through animal surveillance for example. Lessons could be learned from experience in surveillance systems in animal health if barriers between the medicine and veterinary sciences were removed. In a context of climate change, closer contacts between humans and wild animals, there is an increased risk for new pandemics. It would be wise for the authorities to adapt legislation and promote this trans-disciplinary and collaborative approach.
