Is antimicrobial resistance the next pandemic?

Is antimicrobial resistance the next pandemic?

4 September 2020

Fighting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) worldwide is not just about reducing the use of antibiotics and monitoring them properly. This article, co-authored by Professors Graham and Collignon, gives some insights to understand and control this increasing phenomenon. To reduce antibiotic resistance, we need to better understand bacteria, reduce and optimise the use of antibiotics in humans and animals, but also address issues such as pollution, hospital waste, poor water quality and hygiene in some countries. A global approach is also needed to limit the spread of resistance through an integrated cooperation between science and engineering, medicine, social action, and governance. It will imply cooperation and support between countries with different level of development, hygiene improvement and access to clean water. And let’s not forget about other global challenges, overlapping with AMR, such as climate change or COVID-19.
