Researcher in molecular epidemiology applied to viral infections in pigs (permanent position)

ANSES (www.anses.fr) undertakes monitoring, expert assessment, research and reference activities in a broad range of topics that encompass human health, animal health and well-being, and plant health. It offers a cross-cutting perspective on health issues by assessing health risks and benefits, often through the prism of the human and social sciences. Its monitoring, vigilance and surveillance work provides input for risk assessment.
Among others, the Ploufragan-Plouzané-Niort Laboratory carries out research and reference activities in the field of viral infections in pigs, considering animal health & welfare, food safety and worker’s health. The person recruited will consolidate the scientific staff of the Swine Virology Immunology Unit whose missions involve reference activities, epidemiosurveillance, scientific and technical support, research and expertise, all carried out in a complementary and interactive manner in the fields of virology, molecular epidemiology, immunology and vaccinology. Among the viruses monitored and studied are those responsible for respiratory syndromes with important economic consequences in pig farms, such as swine influenza viruses that also require special attention because of their zoonotic potential.

The researcher will contribute his/her expertise to the surveillance of swine viruses and the progress of research work involving the study of viral genomes and the monitoring of their evolution. In particular, he/she will be in charge of molecular epidemiology work related to swine influenza viruses in order to inform the authorities and the stakeholders about any new emerging virus with animal or public health issues. Beyond phylogenetic reconstructions and phylodynamic analyses, he/she will study the viral genotypes (virulence/resistance markers, antigenic sites, receptor-binding sites, determinants of interspecies transmission, etc.) in line with their phenotypes.

He/she will make proposals for the formulation of research questions, participate in the setting up of new projects and contribute to the collaborations of the Unit with its scientific partners. He/she will participate in the training and supervision of post-doctoral researchers and PhD students in the field of viral genomics.

Previous experience/skills: Research experience in molecular virology and/or molecular epidemiology.
