COVID-19 ‘fake news’ and misinformation: internet regulation put to a test

9 June 2020

The COVID-19 pandemics has offered us the possibility to check the commitment of platforms to provide correct and accurate health information and ban misinformation and disinformation. The efforts have limited the spread of ‘fake news’ in terms of volume although it appeared difficult to fight disinformation on multiple fronts. Opposing governments displaying active disinformation programmes is much harder. An effective way of ensuring that the majority of the population access the right information is to put official health information on top of every page, like facebook and twitter did. A new public-private partnership has emerged for more socially responsible outcomes and a popularisation of science in big social platforms. It is necessary to build on this to ensure that internet remains a powerful tool to promote democracy.
