Modelling COVID19 pneumonia

Modelling COVID19 pneumonia

22 July 2020

A Belgian researcher from Brussels university used a putative Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) framework to help understand pneumonia syndrome linked to COVID19 infections. Such framework helps understand toxicity and disease. The major molecular initiating event (MIE) appears to be the ACE2 receptor, leading to various key events (KEs) such as virus replication, inflammation, up to reduced gas exchange and respiratory failure. The adverse outcome of this events succession is cough and dyspnoea. Such model needs regular update and review using new available knowledge and data. The author proposes to create an AOP network to consider all relevant MIEs and AOs and offer disease modelling to serve various purposes such as the development of drugs and vaccines or animal-free new approach methodologies.
