Forests and emerging infectious diseases – One Health

Flash

The global Covid-19 pandemic highlights the importance of sometimes neglected areas of science, such as the link between ecosystems, their biodiversity, and the emergence of new infectious diseases. Humans are increasingly exploiting the environment and are therefore more exposed to certain pathogens hidden in the shadows, which can increase the risk of further contamination. Researchers from INRAE, CIRAD, IRD and the Pasteur Institute of Guyana carried out a bibliometric synthesis analysis on a total of 565 publications, published between 1953 and 2018, focusing on the links between forests, deforestation and emerging infectious diseases. They point to the fragility of knowledge on this major issue and on one health approaches in general.
