Worrying situation of avian flu in France

14 January 2021

To date 124 HPAI H5N8 outbreaks have been declared in France since November 2020 with 600 000 ducks culled to help control the epidemic. Other outbreaks have been reported in Europe with high infection rates in wild and domestic birds. Avian influenza is a highly contagious animal disease caused by influenza A viruses that can be transmitted to humans and has a highly negative impact on the poultry sector. A team from Wageningen University just published an article providing some insight on the pathogenicity and the transmission of three recent viruses, the H5N8-2014 group A virus and the H5N8-2016 and H5N6-2017 group B viruses.
